Bringing Out The Best In Every Child

Year 1 Summer Term

Phonics

The children will develop their phonic knowledge through a range of activities implemented through the ELS scheme of work. This term we will be focusing on alternative graphemes. Children will learn new graphemes each week and embed knowledge of these through reading words and sentences and applying into writing. At the start of each half term, a list of graphemes (phonics sounds) and vocabulary will be sent home to practise reading and spelling. The weeks will be numbered so you know which ones to practise that particular week.  Please see these links for phonics games to support learning at home;

Writing

Throughout the term we will continue to develop the ability to write effective sentences, including an range of punctuation, conjunctions, adjectives and adverbs. We will do this through different genres, including a non-fiction report, a recount and a narrative.

Reading

Children will take part in daily guided reading sessions. On Monday and Tuesday, we will do our Reading Army sessions where each group of children will read and discuss a text with an adult. The main focus of the session is to teach children strategies for reading unknown words and to read with increasing fluency and pace.  It is very important the children understand what they are reading. The sessions also involve asking different styles of questions about the main events and characters from story, and retelling the story. On Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, the children will take part in whole class shared reading sessions.

Children also have the opportunity to read their home reading book to a teacher, teaching assistant, student or volunteer. Their books and reading record will be sent home every night and should be returned to school every day. Please make sure reading records are signed when you have read with your child at home. We can then use this information to change books more frequently.

Handwriting

The children will continue to work on the correct formation of letters; including descenders and ascenders, ensuring that the letters are placed correctly on the line. They will begin to develop a pre-cursive writing style and will have stand-alone sessions every week in order to practise their handwriting. As your child becomes more proficient, please encourage them to practise these skills when writing in their homework book.

Mathematics

In Maths this term, we will continue to develop their understanding of place value and working with numbers up to 100.. Your child will learn to compare groups using language such as equal, more / greater, less / fewer, compare and order numbers, count forwards and backwards from different starting numbers, and represent numbers to 100Our other units of work will be Multiplication and Division, Fractions, and Time. We will continue to practise counting in 2s, 5s and 10s, number bonds, doubles and halves, mental addition and subtraction, and recognising odd and even numbers. These skills will be of profound benefit to your child as they move into Year 2 so any support with developing these skills at home will be greatly appreciated.

Maths Learning Journey

Children have a copy of their Maths Summer Learning Journey targets. These track and support individual progress in Maths and provide the children with personal targets.  Attainment against these targets are monitored and evaluated within school. Please also support your child in reaching these targets with regular practice at home.  We cannot stress enough how important these mental skills are for your child and how invaluable they will be to them when they move into Year 2.

Learning Challenge

This term's learning challenge is titled ‘Where do the Wheels on the Bus Go?’ This half term the children will explore features of the local area. They will then begin to consider ways of travelling around the UK and places to visit, before finding out about how to travel around the world to different continents. Part of the topic will include researching how different types of transport have changed over the years, as well as designing and making our own moving vehicles.

See the knowledge organiser on our Year 1 page.

Science

Our topic this term is ‘Plants’.  We will be labelling the different parts of a plant and learning the different functions of each part.  We will also plant seeds and make observational drawings of the seed at different stages of growth.

See knowledge organiser on our Year 1 page.

Computing

This term the children will be learning to take a photo and print it, record and play sound and enter data onto a graph and discuss the data.

P.E.

In P.E. the children will be taking part in different games activities with our coaches.

R.E.

In R.E. we will be exploring what makes some places sacred. We will consider places that make them feel safe and give simple reasons for why these places make them feel safe. We will find out more about places of worship and look for similarities and differences between pictures and artefacts of three different places of worship - church, synagogue and mosque. We will describe places of worship whilst considering why they are important to believers.

Music

We will follow the Charanga scheme of work, learning about rhythm and pulse and creating our own music.

Homework

A homework book will be sent home every other Friday and needs to be completed and handed in by the Monday of the second week. This will give the teacher time to mark it and set new homework. The homework will consist of two main tasks: record the words containing the graphemes being taught into sentences and a Maths activity. There will be an additional challenge activity that will be linked to a foundation subject.
