Year 4 Spring Prospectus

Mathematics
The daily Mathematics lesson is based on the National Numeracy Strategy. The skills taught are linked into other curriculum areas such as Science, History and Geography in order to assist children in recognising the relevance of what they have learnt.

English
An English lesson is taught every day. In year 4 we encourage children to read for pleasure seeking to introduce them to a variety of genres. Children must produce book reviews, one from each genre to achieve "Bookworm Status".
Spellings are set for homework on a weekly basis, initially these are taken form the Literacy Strategy Year4 spelling list and later words with suffixes are added, these are taken from our regular "word level" work.
Children are taught to write for different purposes, in the Spring Term we look at fantasy and science fiction story writing.
Children are expected to develop their use of punctuation to include commas, speech marks and bullet points. These skills are practiced as opportunities arise across the curriculum.

Science
Our programme of study in Science is "Electricity". We try to include practical and first hand experience as much as possible.

Religious Education
R.E. in the first half of the Spring Term we study "Islam", followed by "Christianity" in the run up to Easter.

Information Communication Technology
Children have a weekly I.C.T. lesson. In the Spring Term we continue to develop word processing skills through our cross-curricula work. In our I.C.T. lessons learn how to programme the "Turtle"

Music
Music is taught weekly, children in Year 4 are provided with the opportunity to purchase brass instrument lessons from a peripatetic music teacher who visits the school once a week.

Topic
Year4 "Topics" run on a two yearly cycle. In the current year the Geography topic is "Rivers." Our art work, dance and music will be related to this work.

Physical Education
Usually children have a 30min Gymnastics lesson each week. Class9 prefer to negotiate their time so that they have a 60min. lesson fortnightly. Children have a Games lesson every Thursday lasting for one hour. The focuses this term are Netball and Football.

Year 4 Summer Prospectus

Mathematics

English
In the Summer Term our focuses of study are Science Fiction writing and persuasive writing. During the month of May children complete assessment tests in Writing, Spelling and Reading.

Science
Our first programme of study in Science is "Friction" and this will be followed by "Temperature". We try to include practical and first hand experience as much as possible.

Religious Education
R.E. in the first half of the Summer Term we study "Islam", followed by "Christianity" during which we focus on how Christianity has affected the lives of others by looking at Charity organisations.

Information Communication Technology
Children have a weekly I.C.T. lesson. In the Summer Term we continue to develop word processing skills using our skills to produce leaflets in Literacy and in Religious Studies. We also learn how to store and present information using branching data bases and graphs.

Music
Children who do not have brass lessons are given the opportunity to learn to play the recorder. Children listen to music by different composers reflecting the ideas of sea and water they then have opportunities to compose their own music. Children perform for the rest of the junior school during class assemblies.

Topic
Year4 "Topics" run on a two yearly cycle. In the current year the African Kingdom of Benin is our topic. We shall link this topic to our Art and Music work. The P.T.F.A. have funded a visit by an African dancer and drummer, children have the opportunity to have a session with each performer.

Physical Education
During the Summer Term our sports include Cricket and Athletics. Gymnastic lessons continue to be held weekly. In our drama lessons we work on a play called "Bill's New Frock".

PSHCE
The focus of our work this term is Drugs. Children look at a history of medicine and using medicines safely, alcohol and smoking. The class is represented on the School Council by a member who feeds back information to the class and who will pass on their concerns.

Topic
Year4 "Topics" run on a two yearly cycle. In the current year the History topic is "Invaders and Settlers", we are studying the Vikings. This will include a trip to York to visit the Jorvik Centre and the Archaeological Research Centre. Our art work in the first part of the term will be related to our work on the Vikings. In the second part of the term our art focus is Design Technology. In these sessions the children will be making their own pop up books to retell Viking sagas.

Physical Education
In year4 children take part in a three week intensive swimming course. During the period when this is taking place of necessary work in other curriculum areas is reduced, particularly other P.E. lessons.

PSHCE
The focus of our work this term is Rights and Responsibilities. The development of Emotional Intelligence is supported through the use of Circle Time and P4C. (Philosophy for children). The class is represented on the School Council by a member who feeds back information to the class and who will pass on their concerns.

Homework
Homework: at the start of the school year children were provided with a homework diary in which to record their homework activities. These will include a Maths. task and an English task, spellings, reading and learning multiplication tables.

About key stage 2

General information

 

Key Stage 2 comprises of eight classes. Classes 7 and 8 make up Year 3, classes 9 and 10 make up Year 4, classes 11 and 12 make up Year 5 and classes 13 and 14 make up Year 6. Each class has approximately 30 children of mixed ability. During the school day the children in Key Stage 2 are provided with a range of practical and first hand experiences. Whilst engaging in such activities and other lessons the children are provided with the opportunity to work with other children. They are also provided with opportunities to work closely with a teacher.

 

Subjects covered

 

Since September 1998 the school has implemented the National Literacy Hour. Speaking and Listening, Reading, Writing, Handwriting and Spelling are the main aspects of the English Curriculum, taught during the National Literacy Hour. The children are also taught Mathematics during the Numeracy Hour. The children in Key Stage 2 are also taught the subjects outlined in the National Curriculum. These subjects are Science, Religious Education, Art, Design and Technology, Geography, History, Information Communication Technology, Music, PHSCE and Physical Education. The children also attend the school library once a week and are able to choose a book to take home and read.

 

Support Staff

 

The support staff who work with children in Key Stage 2 are :- Mrs Moss, Mrs Blackmore, Mrs Yeomans and Mrs Sweeney.

 

Our support staff works closely as a team to support all children within Key Stage 2. Roles of support staff include –

 

·        Working with more able children (Gifted and talented)

·        Working with less able children (SEN)

·        Guided read and writing sessions

·        Educational visits

·        Supporting I.C.T work

·        Library sessions.

 

We also have learning support assistants, who work on a one to one basis with individual children.

 

Extra Curricular activities

 

We offer an extensive range of extra curricular activities. These include:

 

·        Netball – A netball club runs during our autumn term, open to all Year 5 and Year 6 girls. School teams are then selected and netball training continues throughout the spring term.

·        Football – RVPGA runs Year 6 and Year 5 A and B team football league competitions, 7 a side Saturday competitions and 5 a side boys and girls day camps.

·        Spanish – Spanish club begins in our spring term and runs throughout the summer term. The club is open to pupils from years 4, 5 and 6.

·        Newspaper club – This club produces a termly newspaper based on events and activities that have taken place in the school. It is open to Year 4, 5 and 6 pupils.

·        Sign language – This clubs runs during the spring and summer terms. It is open to all Key Stage 2 pupils, teaching them basic British sign language.

·        Cricket – Children can take part in an Interschool 8 a side cricket competition.

·        Athletics – Children can take part in the Interschool competition at Spring Hill High School.

·        Christmas Productions – Key stage 2 presents a Christmas production every year. All of the children and staff work together in a variety of roles to ensure the smooth running of this event. Children are always very keen to participate (over 200 pupils last year) and contribute in roles such as :-

In the autumn term, children are invited to audition for their preferred role and a range of after school rehearsals and workshops are provided by the staff to support this event.

 

·        Music – Children in year 4 and above are able to take advantage of the services of a member from Rochdale Music centre who teaches brass. They have a weekly lesson, a small charge being made to cover instrument hire and teaching. The school band takes part in events such as ‘The Christmas Cracker’ at the Town Hall and the ‘Rochdale Festival of Music, Speech and Dance’. The band also performs at our end of term concerts.

 

Within school, children may also have the opportunity to play the recorder or sing in the school choir, representing the school at concerts in the local area and performing in festivals.

 

·        Choral speaking – Year 4 take part in the choral speaking, successfully gaining highly commended certificates. This year they were joined by year 3 children, who also did well.

 

 

Links with outside agencies

 

As well as offering extra activities within school, we also have a number of links with outside agencies, to support, extend and enhance our curriculum provision. These agencies include:

 

·        Rochdale A.F.C – Each year, R.A.F.C have visited our school to coach Year 1 to Year 6 children. The children are provided with two full sessions. The week usually ends with a sponsored penalty shoot out, to raise money for school sports equipment. They also offer an after school club, during the summer term.

·        Lancashire Cricket Club – They offer coaching for all Year 5 pupils and an after school club for Year 6 pupils.

·        Wardle High School – We are currently establishing a sports partnership, to extend our current sports provision.

·        Littleborough Library – All children in Key Stage 2 visit Littleborough Library and are able to choose a book to take home.
