Year 3 Autumn Prospectus

Numeracy
This term the children will be practising counting on and back in jumps of different numbers from a given number and will use this to calculate numbers a given amount more or less than a number. We will be learning about three digit numbers and finding out what the value of each digit within the number is.  We will then apply this information when adding and subtracting numbers up to, and beyond 100.  Our unit of work on telling the time will revisit o’clock and half past, and introduce quarter to, quarter past and telling the time to within 5 minutes.  We will be working with partners and small groups to investigate measures and length and will be using a range of apparatus to estimate and record the length and width of various items around the classrooms.

Literacy
This term we will be writing reports and recounts and exploring poetry, looking at rhyming and non-rhyming verse.  When writing, the children will be using our VCOP strategy V- vocabulary, C- Connectives, O- Openers and P- Presentation to improve their written work.  We will be reading play scripts and practising performing plays to an audience. Our shared and guided reading sessions will involve reading a range of stories, rhymes and non- fiction text. Handwriting will look at joining letters using simple joins and presentation.

Science
The children will be studying the topics Teeth and Healthy Eating and Magnets and Springs. During our topic on Teeth and Healthy Eating, the children will learn about their diet and how different food groups play different roles in keeping our bodies healthy. We will be investigating the effect sugary drinks have on our teeth (yes, we will be using real teeth!) and designing, making and eating super sandwich snacks. During the topic Magnets and Springs, the children will be carrying out a range of investigations to test which magnets are more powerful than others and how magnets can be used to help us in our environment (recycling). These investigations will develop the children’s skills of making predictions and drawing conclusions.

Religious Education
Our first RE topic will be Judaism. The children will be learning about the Jewish faith, traditions and will act out and record what happens during a Jewish wedding ceremony. After the half term holiday, our focus will be Christianity where we will be reading stories from the Old Testament and finding the hidden meanings of stories. We will then discuss how these stories are relevant to our lives today.

Information Communication Technology
The children will be discovering how computers can be used to change and edit text. They will be changing the colour, size and font of words and using text representation to create effects. We will then be moving onto work involving word processing, changing key words in texts and using the applications to modify and present our own work.

History
Our history work for the whole term will focus on the Romans. We will be learning all about the largest empire in history and finding out about some of the key people who helped it happen such as Julius Caesar, and those who tried to keep them away such as Boudicca! We have a fantastic trip booked to Chester where we will explore Roman ruins and remains, try our hands at archaeology and go on a march around town with a Roman Legionary.

Art and Design & Design and Technology
The children will explore mosaic patterns and pictures as part of our work on Romans. We will investigate how mosaic patterns are made and will be creating our own versions using collage materials. The children will also be using clay and other modelling materials to design and make their own Roman coin upon which they can represent themselves as the Emperor should they so wish! Our design and Technology this term will be looking at different foods, designing and making healthy snacks and reviewing our choices afterwards.

Physical Education (Class 7 - Thursday, Class 8 - Tuesday)
The children will be focusing on gymnastics and dance this term. Each class spends one half term on either dance or gymnastics then swaps for the other half term. Both classes do games on Tuesday afternoons. During their dance lessons they will be developing their ability to respond to music depicting a theme of travelling, using movements on different levels and different speeds. In gymnastics, the children will be using a combination of both floor, and apparatus work to create patterns and movements of symmetrical and asymmetric body shapes.

Circle Time
During circle time the children will be exploring and discussing themselves and their families. We will also work together to set individual targets for the children to work through and talking about how targets help improve our self esteem and help us to learn.
