Key Stage 1

General information

Key Stage 1 comprises of four classes. Class 3 and 4 make up Year 1, whilst class 5 and 6 make up Year 2. Each class has approximately 30 children of mixed ability. During the school day the children in Key Stage 1 are provided with a range of practical and first hand experiences. Whilst engaging in such activities and other lessons the children are provided with the opportunity to work with other children. They are also provided with opportunities to work closely with a teacher.

Subjects covered

The children in Key Stage 1 are taught the subjects outlined in the National Curriculum. These subjects are Science, Religious Education, Art, Design and Technology, Geography, History, Information Communication Technology, Music and Physical Education. Since September 1998 the school has implemented the National Literacy Hour. Speaking and Listening, Reading, Writing, Handwriting and Spelling are the main aspects of the English Curriculum, taught during the National Literacy Hour. The children are also taught Mathematics during the Numeracy Hour. This year the children have been introduced to Circle Time. This is a time set aside each week when children and their teacher sit in a circle and take part in games and activities designed to increase self-awareness, awareness of others, self esteem, cooperation, trust and listening skills.

The children also attend the school library once a week and are able to choose a book to take home and read.

Resource Area

One afternoon each week the classes in Key Stage 1 have access to the Resource Area. The Resource Area is run by Mrs Legge (NNEB). The Resource Area provides the children with further opportunities to explore at first hand a variety of creative activities, including sculpturing, painting and weaving. In the resource area the children also have the opportunity to make models out of various materials including mobilo and lego. Each term a different role play area is set up. This may be in the form of a post office or a travel agents. These role play areas allow the children to interact and develop speaking and listening skills and their writing skills.

Support Staff

As well as organising and teaching in the resource area, Mrs Legge also works with groups of children in all four classes in Key Stage 1. Mrs Legge supports the children when they are working in the ICT suite and when they are engaged in Literacy and Numeracy activities.

Mrs Quinn supports the Year 1 Literacy lessons and works with small groups of children, assisting them with their writing and reading. Mrs Quinn also organises ELS sessions. This is a government initiative which clarifies and reinforces the Year 1 Literacy objectives.
